Певица. Одна из лучших исполнительниц блюза [blues] за всю его историю; получила прозвище Императрица блюза ["Empress of the Blues"]. Сочетала традиции деревенского блюза и спиричуэлса [spiritual] с элементами джаза [jazz]; ее стилю до сих пор подражают некоторые исполнители. Родилась в бедной семье в г. Чаттануге, шт. Теннесси. Начинала карьеру в салунах-дансингах типа "хонки-тонк" [honky-tonk], достигла пика славы в 1920-е, в 1923 записала в г. Нью-Йорке первую пластинку, имевшую сенсационный успех. Выступала с джаз-оркестрами Бенни Гудмана [Goodman, Benny] и Луи Армстронга [Armstrong, Louis Daniel] до конца 1920-х, когда блюзы вышли из моды. В 1937 попала в автомобильную катастрофу в штате Миссисипи и умерла от потери крови, так как ей было отказано в помощи в больнице, предназначенной только для белых. Обстоятельства ее гибели описаны в трагедии Э. Олби [Albee, Edward] "Смерть Бесси Смит" ["The Death of Bessie Smith"] (1960)
